Hengduan Mountains


We just learned about the Pamir Mountains.

The next largest mountain range is the Hangduan Mountains in China.

Three of the great rivers in China run through this mountain range, the Yangtze, Mekong and Salween.
These mountains are also a home to the giant panda.

Pamir Mountains


We just learned about the Hindu Kush mountain range.

Another mountain range is the Pamir Mountains, in Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan and China.

They are nicknamed the Roof of the World or the Onion range.
It has the longest glacier in the world outside of the polar regions.
There is a path going through the Pamir Mountains that is part of a very important path long ago called the Silk Road.

Hindu Kush


We just learned about the Karakoram Mountains.

The next largest mountain range is the Hindu Kush in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Some people think the name means Hindu Killer because of the people that died on the mountain.
Others think it means sparkling snows of India, mountains of India or water mountain.

It was also called Paropamisadae a long time ago, which means Beyond the Raised Land.

Long ago there were mines in these mountains for lapis lazuli, emeralds and rubies.
The mines are not used anymore because they did not find any more gems.

Karakoram


We just learned about the mountain range the Himalayas.

The next largest mountain range is Karakoram, which means black gravel.
Because it is near the Himalayas, sometimes it is included as part of the greater Himalayan mountain range.

This mountain range is in Pakistan, India, China, Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

It has the most glaciers of any place in the world except for the north and south poles.

Himalayas


We just learned about the 14 tallest mountain peaks like Shisapangma, that are all over 8,000 KM above sea level.

Some of these mountain peaks are part of the same mountain area, which is called a mountain range.

The tallest mountain range in the world is the Himalayas, which means Abode of Snow. Abode means house.
It is the mountain with Mt. Everest, the highest peak. There are over a hundred mountains on this range, and hundreds of lakes.

Shishapangma


We just learned about the mountain peak Gasherbrum II.

The next highest mountain peak is Shishapangma in Tibet.

This mountain is the shortest of the 14 mountain peaks in the world that are over 8,000 meters tall.
These mountains are sometimes called the "eight-thousanders".
It was the last of this group to be climbed, because the countries that control where it is did not want people visiting.

Some people think the name means "Crest above the grassy plain", and other people think it means "Meat of the dead animals and malty dregs" named after a story of people who were stranded in the mountains.

It is also known as Gosainthan which means "place of the saint".

Gasherbrum II


We just learned about the Broad Peak.

The next highest mountain peak is Gasherbrum II, also known as K4,
on the border between Pakistan and China.

It is part of the Gasherbrum mountains in the Karakoram mountain range, along with Broad Peak and Gasherbrum I.

The name comes from the words beautiful and mountain.

It's name means Beautiful Mountain.
It's also known as Hidden Peak or K5.

The name Hidden Peak is because the mountain peak is very far away from any nearby towns or cities.

Annapurna Massif


We just learned about the mountain peak Nanga Parbat.

The next highest mountain peak is Annapurna Massif in Nepal.
It's name means full of food, or Goddess of the Harvests.

This mountain is one of the most dangerous to climb, and has the highest rate of death for all mountains in the world.
For every 3 people that have tried to climb the mountain, one has died.

In 2014, 39 people were killed from avalanches and snowstorms on the mountain.

The next highest mountain peak is Nanga Parbat in Kashmir.
The name means Naked Mountain.

It has very steep peaks on the mountain, and is very difficult to climb.

Cho Oyu


We just learned about the mountain Makalu.

The next highest mountain is Cho Oyu in China and Nepal, and it means Turquoise Goddess.

Near the mountain peak is a path called Nangpa La, which is used for trading between the people who live in the mountains.

Some people think that Cho Oyu is the easiest mountain to climb that is over 8,000 meters.

Makalu


We just learned about the mountain peak lhotse.

The next highest mountain peak is Makalu in Nepal and China.

It is 27,838 feet high.

This peak is a four sided pyramid shape.
Some people think it is one of the most difficult mountains in the world to climb.
The last part of climbing the mountain is climbing up rock and ice climbing, not just hiking.

There is a beautiful valley at the base of the mountain peak, called the Makalu-Barun valley.

It has high waterfalls and deep gorges, flowers blooming below snowy mountain peaks.
There are some rare types of plants and animals that can only be found in this valley.

Others say that there are magical valleys in the mountains where people can live forever if they find them.

It gets its name because it is part of the Karakoram mountains, and it is the second peak discovered.

It is such a dangerous mountain to climb, that 1 out of every 4 people that have tried to climb it, died.

Mount Everest


We just learned about Lake Vänern.

Let's learn about the highest mountain peaks in the world.

The highest mountain in the world is Mount Everest in Nepal and Tibet.
It was named Mount Everest after Sir George Everest, who was in charge of mapping out that land when it was discovered.

It is known in Nepal as Sagarmāthā which means "the Head in the Great Blue Sky", and in Tibet as Chomolungma which means "Goddess Mother of Mountains".

It's tallest peak is 29,029 feet above sea level.
Sea level is the height on earth where the ocean is.

The tallest building in the world is only 2,722 feet high, so this mountain is ten times taller than the tallest building in the world.

Lake Vänern


We just learned about Lake Urmia in Iran.

The next biggest lake is Lake Vänern in Sweden.

This lake was made when the ice age melted, and is very old.

An old viking ship was found at the bottom of the lake.
