Tarsus

The tarsus is the name used for the bones in your ankle
that connect from your tibia and fibula to your main foot bones.
tarsus
(from: wikipedia - tarsus (skeleton)

The seven bones are:
A - Calcaneus
B - Talus
C - Cuboid
D - Navicular
E, F, G - Cuneiform bones

The calcaneus bone is the large bone that makes up the heel of your foot.

Tibia & Fibula

We just learned about the femur and patella.

The bones attached below those two are called the tibia and fibula.
patella
(from: wikipedia - fibula)

The tibia is the big one in front, also known as the shin bone.
It's the big flat bone you can feel in the front of your lower leg.
If you feel down around the outside of your ankle you can feel the smaller tibia bone.

Patella

The patella is the kneecap bone, right at the bottom of your femur.
patella
(from: wikipedia - patella)

It is the small bone right at the point of your knee.

Femur

The hip bone or pelvis connects to the thigh bone of your leg,
which is called the femur.

The femur is the longest, heaviest and strongest bone in the human body.

Pelvis, hip bone

We just learned about the Coccyx Bone.

At the base of the spine, the sacrum is connected to the pelvis, or hip bone.

The pelvic bone is made up of three parts, the ilium, ischium and pubis.
hip bone
(from: wikipedia - hip bone)

The ilium is the hip bone part you can feel on your side.
The ischium is the bone that you sit on, right on either side of your bottom.
The pubis is right in the middle below your tailbone.

Coccyx

Last we learned about the sacrum which connects to the lumbar vertebrae.

Below the sacrum, and the last part of the spine
is the coccyx (sounds like cock-six)
Sometimes it's also called the tail bone.

It is made up of three to five bones that curve forward toward the front of your body.

Sacrum

We just learned about the Distal Phalanges.

We've learned before about most of the bones in your spine,
the cervical vertebrae, thoracic vertebrae, and lumbar vertebrae.

There are two more parts on your spine at the very bottom.
The first one is called the sacrum, a somewhat large triangle shaped bone right in the middle of your hips.

sacrum by itself:

(from: wikipedia - sacrum)

sacrum shown where it is in between the hip bones:

We'll learn about the other part next Tuesday!

Distal phalanges

The finger tip bones in your fingers are called the distal phalanges.

There are only four of them in your hand, because your thumb has one less bone than the rest of your fingers.

(from: wikipedia - distal phalanges)

Intermediate phalanges

The finger bones in the middle of your finger are called the intermediate phalanges.

They are connected to the proximal phalanges,
but there are only four intermediate phalanges, because the thumb does not have a middle thumb bone.

Proximal phalanges

We just learned about the Metacarpal bones in the hand.

The first bones in your fingers closest to the main part of your hand are called the proximal phalanges.
proximal phalanges
(from: wikipedia - proximal phalanges)

There are five of them numbered one through five, starting with your thumb bone and going toward your pinky.

Hand bones - metacarpals

We just learned about the Carpal Wrist Bones.

The bones in your hand are called your metacarpals.

If you feel in your hand, you can feel the long thin bones going out toward each knuckle and finger.
metacarpals
(from: wikipedia - hand)

The metacarpal bones are numbered one through five, starting with your thumb bone and going toward your pinky.

Wrist bones - carpals

We just learned about the Radius and Ulna in the forearm.

The bones in your wrist are called your carpals.

You can't even really feel them all, but there are eight carpal bones in there!
carpals
(From: Wikipedia - hand)

The bones have crazy names like scaphoid, lunate, triquetral, pisiform, trapezium, trapezoid, capitate and hamate.

Whew!

Radius & Ulna

We just learned about the Humerus.

The bones in your forearm are called the radius and ulna.

The radius is the one on the inside top, and the ulna is the one on the outside bottom.
When you turn your hand over, your radius bone moves, but the ulna stays in one place.

Humerus

We just learned about the False Ribs.

The large bone for your upper arm is called your humerus.
humerus
(From: Wikipedia - humerus)

Sometimes when you bang the end of your elbow and it hurts, that's called hitting your funny bone.
Someone probably thought this up because the word humerus sounds just like humerous which means funny, and your humerus bone connects to your elbow!

False Ribs

We just learned about the Pectoral Girdle

The lower five ribs are called the false ribs.

false ribs
(From: Wikipedia - false ribs)

The upper three false ribs are called the vertebro-chondral ribs, because they connect from the vertebrae to the rib above them.

The lower two false ribs are called the floating ribs or vertebral ribs because they only connect to your vertebrae, and the other end is just floating out there.

Pectoral Girdle

The clavicle and scapula together make up what is called the pectoral girdle.

Clavicle and Scapula

We just learned about the Esophagus

The bones on the upper part of your shoulder are called the clavicle (or collarbone) and the scapula (or wingbone).

The clavicle is the bone in the front that goes from your neck to your shoulder.
It is connected to your sternum (middle of your chest) and your scapula.

The scapula is the bone in the back that sticks out like a wing, and connects up to the back of your shoulder.
It is connected to your clavicle and your upper arm bone.

Lumbar Vertebrae

We just learned about the Thoracic Vertebrae.

The five vertebrae in your lower back are called the "lumbar" vertebrae.

To help remember that, think of your back hurting so you put your hand on your lower back, and you have five fingers on your hand.
L is for lower and lumbar, and five fingers for five vertebrae!

Thoracic Vertebrae

We just learned about the Cervical Vertebrae.

The middle part of your spine is called the Thoracic Vertebrae.
Remember that your ribs are called the Thoracic Cage, and your Spine is made up of vertebrae.

(from: wikipedia - thoracic vertebrae)

Cervical Vertebrae

We just learned about the True Ribs

The upper seven vertebrae that connect your head to your shoulders are called the cervical vertebrae.
