Ozarks

We just learned about the U.S. Interior Highlands.

Part of the U.S. Interior Highlands is the Ozarks.
The name Ozarks comes from the French word "Aux" meaning "Of" and either the state name Arkansas, or the river arc nearby.
So it was either Aux-Arkansas, or Aux-arc, which got changed to Ozarks.
Because it was so long ago, nobody is really sure where it came from.

One fun part of the Ozarks mountains is a place called the Devil's Honeycomb, part of Hughes Mountain.
There are rocks there that stick up like columns or posts all over the place, and it almost looks like a bees honeycomb.

These mountains go through Arkansas, MIssouri and Oklahoma.

If we look further east of the Nevadan Belt, the mountains there are called the Laramide Belt, going from Alaska, through Canada, the lower US states and Mexico.

The belt is named after the Laramie Mountains in Wyoming, which were named after an explorer named Jacques La Ramee who disappeared in those mountains in 1820.

Transverse Ranges

We just learned about the Central California Coast Ranges.

Another group of mountain ranges in the Pacific Coast Belt of the North American Cordillera is the Transverse Ranges.

These ranges are different, because they go east to west, instead of north to south like the other ranges in the Pacific Coast Belt.

They were created by the San Andreas Fault, which is where parts of the earth way underground ran are pushing against each other, and forced the ground above to go up, creating the mountains.

They are a very popular place to live, as the city of Los Angeles is right by the San Monica Mountains. The famous "Hollywood" sign is in Mount Lee in that mountain range.
