Guangzhou China


We just learned about the city of Karachi Pakistan.

Let's learn a little about the city of Guangzhou China, also called Canton!

This city is in China.
It is about 7,000 square kilometers, and about 18 million people live there.
The people in this city speak either Cantonese or Mandarin.

Guangzhou has a soccer team and two basketball teams the Loong Lions and Leopards.

To eat in this city you might have Chow Mein, which is made of fried noodles with vegetables and meat.

Isaac and Rebekah


We just learned about Abraham and Isaac.

Another part of the Bible is story of Isaac and Rebekah, from Genesis 24.

When Isaac grew up and wanted to get married, his father Abraham told him to get a wife from his old land, so he sent a servant there.
Abraham told the servant when he found a woman to ask her for a drink of water.
If the woman gave him water and also gave his camel water that she was a great wife.

When he went to the land, a woman named Rebekah came along and did just as Abraham said, so the servant brought Rebekah back home to Isaac and they got married.

A Corner of Saint-Paul Hospital and the Garden with a Heavy, Sawed-Off Tree - Van Gogh


We just learned about the Corridor in Saint Paul Hospital.

Another of Van Gogh's famous paintings is called A Corner of Saint-Paul Hospital and the Garden with a Heavy, Sawed-Off Tree.

While he was in the hospital, one of the corners really stood out to him because of a hill with a tree that had been struck by lightning, some benches, and the colors in nature.

Crown of Thorns Starfish


We just learned about the Sunflower Sea Star.

Another type of starfish is the Crown of Thorns Starfish, also called acanthaster planci.

This starfish grows to be about 14 inches, and his sharp spikes on top that hurt and sting if the starfish is stepped on.
They live around Australia, and come in colors of purple, blue, red, grey, brown, green or yellow.

The name crown of thorns comes from the Bible story of Jesus wearing a crown of thorns.
Because the starfish kind of looks like a thorny crown the people named it that.

Stage 3 - Non-REM Sleep


We just learned about Stage 2 - Non-REM Sleep.

Another part of sleep is Stage 3 - Non-REM Sleep, also called slow-wave sleep or deep sleep.

During this time of sleep, the human body lets out chemicals that help the body grow, and let the brain take a break.
The brain also works on organizing the memories from the day.

Let's learn a little about the city of Karachi!

This city is in Pakistan.
It is about 3,527 square kilometers, and about 20 million people live there.
The people in this city mostly speak Urdu.

Corridor in Saint-Paul Hospital - Van Gogh


We just learned about the Van Gogh - Hospital at Saint-Rémy-de -Provence.

Another of Van Gogh's famous paintings from when he was in that hospital is the Corridor in Saint-Paul Hospital.

When he was in the hospital, there were hallways there that he thought felt very lonely, so he painted them to try and show how they made him feel.

Sunflower Sea Star


We just learned about the Eight Armed Sea Star.

Another type of starfish is the Sunflower Sea Star also called the pycnopodia helianthoides.

These starfishes live in the pacific, and are the biggest starfish in the world growing to be about 3 feet wide.
They can have up to 24 arms, and can come in many colors like orange, yellow, red, brown, or purple.
If they get attacked by another animal, they can regrow them within a few weeks.

We just learned about the Abram and Sarai.

Another God's promise to Abram.

When Abram was getting older, he asked God about if he would ever have kids.

God told him that he would have so many children and grandchildren like the stars in the sky that he wouldn't be able to count them all.

Van Gogh - Hospital at Saint-Rémy-de -Provence


We just learned about the Van Gogh - Portrait of Dr. Felix Rey.

Another Van Gogh's painting is of the Hospital at Saint-Rémy-de -Provence.

About 5 months after Van Gogh was in the hospital for his ear getting cut off, he went to an asylum where he could get help to get his mind right.

He stayed at this asylum for a year, and made many paintings while he was there.

Eight-Armed Sea Star


We just learned about the Necklace Starfish.

Another type of starfish is the Eight-Armed Sea Star.

This animal lives in the pacific, and it's coloring could be brown/green, brown/orange or brown/black.
It has pointed arms, a flat top and is usually about 10 inches wide.

These starfish live underwater in the muddy sand, burying themselves so they can't be seen.
They eat things like sea urchins, sand dollars, sea cucumbers or snails.

We just learned about Non-Rapid Eye Movement Sleep.

Let's learn about Stage 1 - Non-REM Sleep.

When you are falling asleep, there are thee steps called stages you go through.

The first one called stage 1 is sometimes called relaxed wakefulness.
The brain starts calming down, and sometimes muscles flex a little which are called hypnic jerks.
If someone fully wakes up, they might not even really think of this as sleep since it wasn't deep sleep, but it's stage 1 Non REM sleep.

We just learned about the Chinese city of Shanghai.

Let's learn a little about the Chinese city of Beijing!

This city is in China.
It is about 16,000 square kilometers, and about 21 million people live there.
The people in this city speak mostly Mandarin Chinese.

There are a lot of sports teams in Beijing, like the Tigers, Ducks and Royal Fighters basketball teams, the Kunlun Red Star hockey team, and the Guon, BIT, Phoenix soccer teams.

Peking duck is a dish from Beijing[a] that has been prepared since the Imperial era. The meat is characterized by its thin, crispy skin, with authentic versions of the dish serving mostly the skin and little meat, sliced in front of the diners by the cook. Ducks bred especially for the dish are slaughtered after 65 days and seasoned before being roasted in a closed or hung oven. The meat is often eaten with spring onion, cucumber and sweet bean sauce with pancakes rolled around the fillings. Sometimes pickled radish is also inside. Crispy aromatic duck is a similar dish to Peking duck and is popular in the United Kingdom. To eat in this city you might have Peking duck, which is duck baked with vegetables and sauces.

Abram and Sarai


We just learned about the Tower of Babel.

Let's learn about the story of Abram and Sarai.

We learned before about Noah, and one of the descendants of Noah was Abram.
In Genesis 12, Abram was told by God to go travel the world and he would take care of him.

Abram got married to a beautiful woman named Sarai.
When he was traveling he was going to Egypt, but was worried that people would see his wife Sarai, then attack him and steal her.
So he told everyone she was his sister.

The Pharaoh thought he was beautiful, and took Sarai for his wife, but then got sick because God wasn't happy about this.
Pharaoh let Sarai go and told everyone to leave Abram alone and then sent Abram on his way.

Van Gogh - Portrait of Dr. Felix Rey


We just learned about Van Gogh's painting Garden of the Hospital in Arles.

Another one of Van Gogh's famous paintings is the Portrait of Dr. Felix Rey.

While he was in the hospital with his injured ear, there was a nice doctor who helped take care of Van Gogh.
He wrote about this doctor to his brother Theo and said he was "brave, hardworking, and always helping people".

So as a thank you to the doctor, Van Gogh made a portrait of Dr. Felix Rey and gave it to him.
The doctor's mother didn't like the portrait, and she used it to cover a hole in a chicken coop!

Later on the painting was sold to an art dealer, and today is worth over $50 million.
