What Child Is This?

We just learned about the Christmas song called The Christmas Song, also known as Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.

Another famous Christmas song is What Child Is This?.

The words for this song were written in Great Britain in 1865 by William Chatterton Dix.
Long ago Chatteron got very sick for a long time and almost died.
While he was recovering he spent most of his time reading the Bible and writing poetry about Jesus.

Six years after he wrote it, someone put the poem to music.
The music for the song comes from an old tune called "Greensleeves", which was a song about a woman who wore a shirt with green sleeves.

In the lyrics for the song, it asks about who the child Jesus, and talks about the shepherds and wise men who came to see the baby Jesus.

David Slaying Goliath - Sistine Chapel - Michelangelo

We just learned about Michelangelo's Sistine chapel painting of the Sibyls.

Another famous part of Michelangelo's painting on the Sistine chapel is David Slaying Goliath.

On the four corners of the ceiling are stories from the Bible about heroes that helped save Israel.

The painting of David shows him standing over Goliath holding a sword.
In the old testament story, Goliath was a giant that everyone was afraid of, and David was a small shepherd boy who wasn't afraid of Goliath because he had faith in God.
Even though he was just a young boy, he beat Goliath in battle.

Computer Printer

We just learned about the Computer Audio.

Another part of a computer is the Computer Printer.

The first types of printers were very loud, and had big rolls of paper that had to be separated after printing.
These days printers can be wireless, you can print from your phone or computer, and they can print anything from a normal piece of paper to a picture.

The ink for a printer is called toner, and comes in small cases called cartridges that have to be replaced when they get empty.

Honey Badger

We just learned about the American Badger.

Another type of animal in the same family is the Honey Badger.

These animals weigh about 15 kilograms, are about 28 centimeters tall and 70 centimeters long.
They have a long body, short legs, sharp claws, and thick skin that is very loose.
Their fur is black, with a big white stripe on the back kind of like a skunk.

Even though honey badgers are not that big, they are very ferocious, and will even attack bigger animals like lions and hyenas.
Honey badgers eat just about anything for food.
Using their strong arms and big claws they will dig up beehives, lift up rocks to find snakes, rip bark from trees for bugs, or dig in holes for rabbits.
With their thick loose fur, they aren't even hurt by porcupine quills, snake bites, bee stings or bites from other animals.
When they get their food they eat up every bit, even the bones, shells, feathers, and fur!

Computer Audio

We just learned about the Webcam.

Another part of a computer is the Computer Audio.

When computers first were invented, pretty much the only sounds they could make were loud beeps.
Now computers are able to play music, and you can even record sounds on your computer.
To listen to sound, you need either headphones or speakers, and to talk to your computer you need a microphone.

Some people even wear headsets that are combined microphone and headphones, and they can have audio chats with other people almost like a phone call.
Microphones, speakers and headsets come in all shapes and sizes, from huge speakers that can play really loud music, to expensive microphones for recording songs for music artists, to small headsets that people wear while they are working to talk to people on the other side of the world.

American Badger

We just learned about the Weasel family of animals called Musteloidea.

One member of this family is the American Badger.

These animals live in North America, all they way from Canada down to Mexico.
They grow to be about 70 centimeters, and weigh about 7 kilograms.
Their fur is mostly grey, with some black and white marks on their face, and a white stripe that goes all the way from their head to their tail.

Badgers are very active animals and they eat lots of smaller animals like rats, snakes, or lizards.
Usually they like to hunt alone, but people have now seen badgers hunting together with coyotes!

Badgers have really long and strong claws, and are great diggers.
Coyotes are realy fast, and can chase down just about any prey.

So the badger and coyote will work together to chase down their prey.
If the animal tries to run away, the coyote will get it.
If it tries to hide in a hole in the ground, the badger will get it.

The coyotes and badgers don't share homes or snuggle together, but they work together to try and hunt up something to eat!

Webcam

We just learned about the Bluetooth.

Another part of a computer is a Webcam.

Not that long ago, if you wanted to send a picture to your friend you had to put it in an envelope and mail it through the post office.

These days if you want to send a picture you can take one with your phone camera, or the camera hooked up to your computer.
Remmember that smart phones are actually tiny computers!

You can even have a live video with a friend and you can see them using the cameras on your computers.
When these cameras on computers first came out they were called Webcams, and they usually were a separate camera that you set up and plugged into your computer.
These days pretty much every laptop already has a camera in it, but sometimes people still want a fancy expensive camera to use for talking to their friends over the computer.

Weasels

We just learned about the Ring-Tailed Lemur, and we've learned about a lot of other types of Primates from Gorillas to Chimpanzees and monkeys!

Let's start learning about Weasels!

When we think of weasels, we usually think of a small animal with a long body that sneaks around on the ground.
We even use the word weasel sometimes to mean someone is being sneaky!

But the weasel family in the animal kingdom has a lot of different types of animals, like skunks, raccoons, red pandas, badgers and otters!
In Latin, the word for weasel is "mustela", so the science name for the weasel family is "Musteloidea".
There are over 60 types of animals in the weasel family, and small like less than a foot long, or big like almost 100 pounds.

Most of them are small with long bodies, short legs, round ears and thick fur.
They are all wild animals, but most of them are really adorable!

We Wish You a Merry Christmas

We just learned about the Christmas carol Deck the Halls.

Another famous Christmas carol is We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

This song was written some time around 1935 by an organist named Arthur Warrell.
When he first wrote it, he used the words "I wish you a merry Christmas" instead of "We wish you a merry Christmas".

One of the funny things is the figgy pudding that people demand before they go.
That is an old dessert that was usually like a sweet cake with honey fruits and nuts.

There were also some funny people who had a different version of the song and had the ending of "New Year" rhyme with "barrel of beer".

Bluetooth

We just learned about the Power Supply.

Another part of a computer is Bluetooth.

We know that you can hook things up to your computer like your monitor, or plugs things into USB ports.
But sometimes you might have a keyboard, mouse or headphones that are wireless and don't plug into anything.

For things like that you can use something called Bluetooth, which is a way for your computer to talk to other things using radio waves on a certain channel.
If you want to hook up a bluetooth mouse, it's kind of like both your computer and your mouse have to turn on the radio and listen to the same station.
Once they are on the same station they know how to talk to each other, and the mouse can send message to the computer to move the cursor around.

The Bluetooth name comes from an old Scandinavian king named Harald Bluetooth, who helped bring Danish tribe together into one kingdom.
This was supposed to mean that the Bluetooth way of wireless radio could be the way to help bring other technologies together.
The symbol that kind of looks like an xB is the symbol of the King.
