Jesus restores Peter

We just learned about when Jesus appeared to Thomas.

When Jesus was being taken to be crucified on the cross, people saw Peter and said that he was a follower of Jesus.
Peter was scared that they would kill him too just for knowing Jesus so he said he didn't know him.

Jesus had told Peter even before he was arrested that Peter would deny him three times before the rooster crowed.
After Peter had told people he didn't know Jesus three times, he heard a rooster crow.
He felt very sad about saying that because he loved Jesus, he was just too afraid.

When Jesus had come back to life after the cross, he was talking to Peter.
Jesus asked if Peter loved him.
Peter said yes that he does.
Then Jesus said to feed his sheep.

He did this three times in a row, to show Peter that he forgave him for denying him three times.

He told Peter to feed his sheep because he wanted him to tell the whole world about Jesus.
Peter became one of the first leaders for churches that followed Jesus words.

Jesus appears to Thomas

After Jesus had appeared to his other disciples in their house, one of them named Thomas was not there.
The other disciples told him that they saw Jesus, but he said that he would not believe that Jesus had been resurrected until he saw the nail marks in Jesus' hands, and the cut in his side from the soldier's spear.

A week later Jesus came and again appeared inside the disciples house, even though all the doors were locked.
He said "Peace be with you!"

Then he said to Thomas "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.".

Thomas said "My Lord and my God!"

Jesus said to Thomas "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

Because Thomas doubted whether Jesus was really alive, he is sometimes called Doubting Thomas.

Jesus appears in his disciples house

We just learned about when Jesus appeared to Peter.

After Jesus had been crucified, his disciples were scared of the people who had put him on the cross.
They thought maybe people were going to come arrest them next, so they were in a house with all the doors locked.

Suddenly Jesus appeared to them and said "Peace be with you!".
He showed them his pierced hands and side.

The disciples were very happy to see him, and very surprised because all of the doors were locked and Jesus just appeared.

He told people "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.".
This meant he was sending his disciples out into the world to spread his message.

Then he breathed on them and said "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.".
This meant he was trusting them to go out and be leaders in churches to tell people about forgiveness.

Jesus appears to Peter fishing

We just learned about when Jesus appears on the road to Emmaus.

Another time Jesus appeared to his disciples after his resurrection was when they were fishing.

Simon Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, James and John Zebedee and two other disciples were out fishing in the boat.
All night long they didn't catch anything.

In the morning they saw someone by the shore who asked if they had caught any fish.
They said no, and the person said to throw the net on the other side of the boat.
They did what the person said and they caught so many fish they couldn't even pull the net in!

Peter realized that it was Jesus on the shore, and he jumped out of the boat and went to Jesus.

They came and ate some bread and fish with Jesus around a fire and talked to him.

Jesus appears on the road to Emmaus

After Jesus had risen from his tomb and appeared to Mary, he later appeared to some of his disciples who were walking down the road to a town called Emmaus.

When they saw him, Jesus didn't let him know who he was.
He walked with them on the road and they talked about how Jesus had just died and was not in his tomb.
He went to their house for dinner, and then they knew it was Jesus, and then he disappeared.
They went on to tell everyone what they had seen.

Jesus appears to Mary

We've learned how the two women named Mary found Jesus' empty tomb and men in bright clothing that were angels telling them that Jesus had come back to life.

When the two women were leaving the tomb, Jesus appeared to Mary!
She was very excited to see him, but he told her that he had not yet gone up to heaven to see God the Father, and he wanted her to go tell his disciples what she saw.

Jesus Empty Tomb

After Jesus was buried, the two women named Mary went to Jesus' tomb to put some nice smelling spices on his body in the tomb.

When they got to where his tomb was, the guards that were supposed to be keeping people away from the tomb were gone, and so was the stone blocking the tomb!

The women ran off to tell the disciples what they saw, but the disciples did not believe them.

Jesus Burial

We just learned about Jesus saying it is finished at his crucifixion.

After Jesus had died, one of Jesus' disciples named Joseph of Arimathea asked Pontius Pilate for the body.
Joseph took Jesus' body, wrapped it in a clean cloth, put it into a tomb, and rolled a big stone in front of it.

Jesus' mother Mary and Mary Magdalene who was a follower of Jesus were both outside the tomb.

Since Jesus had told everyone that he would rise again in three days, Pontius Pilate had a guard stay by the tomb to make sure it was closed up tight, and stand outside to make sure that nobody would steal Jesus' body and then pretend like he had risen from the dead.

Some of the women who were followers of Jesus went home to make some spices and perfumes which were used on people's bodies after they died, with plans to bring them back later for Jesus' body.

Jesus Crucifixion - It is finished

When Jesus was being crucified on the cross, he said "I am thirsty" to get a last drink, then said "It is finished" and "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit".

After he said that, he died on the cross.

When he died, the curtain in the temple was torn from top to bottom, and the earth shook.

Jesus Crucificion - Why have you forsaken me?

We just learned about Jesus telling Mary and John to take care of each other.

When Jesus had been on the cross a long time, he was almost ready to die.

He cried out My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Jesus was going to die while carrying the sin of the whole world with him.

In the book of Psalms, King David had written a song that began like that, and then goes on to talk about being in pain and suffering, but then being delivered by God and praising God as he rules over all the nations.

Jesus talked a lot about things that prophets said were going to happen, and many times told people that he was proof that some of the prophecies were coming true.

Psalms were poetry and songs that were written mostly by King David about 1,000 years before Jesus came along.

Psalm #22 in the book of Psalms starts off with: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
which is exactly what Jesus said. He knew every word of every Psalm.

The Psalm goes on to say: "a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet. They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment."

Jesus was on the cross with his hands and feet pierced, and the solders had divided up his clothes and cast lots for them.

It goes on at the end to tell how the Lord will rule over the nations, and ends with: "They will proclaim his righteousness, declaring to a people yet unborn: He has done it!"

Jesus talked in parables a lot, and did things that were part of fulfilling the prophecies of the prophets from long ago.
King David's Psalm was written over 1,000 years before Jesus came along, but on the cross he was still fulfilling the prophecy, and even said the first line of the Psalm that talked about what was happening.

Jesus Crucifixion - Here is your son

We just learned about Jesus saying to forgive people at his crucifixion.

When Jesus was on the cross, he looked down and saw his mother Mary, and also his disciple John.

He said to them Woman, here is your son and Here is your mother.

Even though Jesus was dying on the cross, he was thinking about who would take care of his mother when he was gone, so he told his disciple to take care of his mother when he was gone.

Jesus Crucifixion - Father forgive them

We just learned about Jesus being crucified next to criminals.

When Jesus was being put up on the cross, he said Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.

God sent Jesus into the world to die on the cross for everyone's sins.
It was all part of God's plan, and the people who were crucifying Jesus were just soldiers and workers and didn't know he was the son of God.

With all of the power that Jesus had he could have walked down off the cross but didn't, instead he asked God the Father to not destroy the world for what they were doing because it was all part of his plan.

In that way it showed us how much he loved the world because he went through the suffering to save us.

Jesus Crucifixion - With criminals

When Jesus was nailed to the cross he was put between two criminals.

Crucifixion was one of the worst punishments for anyone, so even though Jesus was a good person he was punished with bad people.

One of the criminals was not nice to him, said nasty things to him and said that if Jesus was really the Messiah he should save himself.
The other criminal told the nasty one that he was wrong, and that while both the criminals were being punished for things they did wrong, Jesus hadn't done anything wrong.
He asked Jesus to remember him in his kingdom.

Because this man had faith in Jesus, even though he was a criminal Jesus said that the nice criminal would be with him in paradise that day.

Jesus Trial - Crown of Thorns

After Pontius Pilate sent Jesus to be crucified,
the crowd of people made fun of him, put a robe on him and gave him a crown made of sharp thorns to wear to pretend like he was a king since he said he was the king of the Jews.

Even though Jesus was very powerful, he did not fight back because he knew it was all part of God's plan for him to die on the cross.

Jesus Trial - Pontius Pilate

After Jesus was put on trial by the group called the sanhedrin, he was taken to the people in charge of the city he lived in to be put on trial.

The person's name was Pontius Pilate, and he was the ruler in the area of Judea that was part of the country called Rome.

The people who did not like Jesus brought him to Pontius Pilate and said that Jesus was telling everyone that he was the King of the Jews.
They said that it was against the law for him to say he was king, because the Roman Emperor was in charge of all the people and that would mean Jesus was better than him.

Pontius Pilate talked to Jesus but didn't think that he did anything wrong, so he wanted to have him set free.

The angry crowd said that they wanted Jesus to be guilty, so Pilate agreed to have Jesus crucified on a cross.

Jesus Trial - Sanhedrin

We just learned about when Jesus was arrested, and he told his apostles not to fight after they got out their swords.

After Jesus was arrested by the people who didn't like him, they took him to the leaders of the Hebrews at that time, a group of people called the Sanhedrin that were in charge of making sure people were following God's laws.

Most of them did not like Jesus and thought he was causing problems with the people, and they did not believe he was the son of God.

They made fun of him, beat him, and asked him many questions.
When they asked him if he was Christ the son of God, he said that he was.

For the Hebrews, it was against the law for a person to say that, and they did not believe that Jesus really was the son of God.
So they said that he was guilty of blasphemy, which means saying things against God.
