Hindi - Black, White, Brown, Gray

We just learned that in Hindi, red, orange and yellow are लाल (laal), नारंगी (naarangee), पीला (peela), and green, blue, purple, pink are हरा (hara), नीला (neela), बैंगनी (bainganee), गुलाबी (gulaabee).

Let's learn some more colors!

Hindi Alphabet

We just learned how to Count to ten in Hindi.

The Hindi alphabet looks very different from the English one, and it is called "Devanagari".
The vowels look like this: अ, अं1, ॲ / ऍ, इ, उ, ऋ, ऌ4, ए, ओ, प, पं, पि, पु, पृ, पॢ, पॅ, पे, पो
and the consonants look like this: क, ख, ग, घ, ङ, च, छ, ज, झ, ञ, ट, ठ, ड, ढ, ण, त, थ, द, ध, न, प, फ, ब, भ, म, य, र, ल, व, श, ष, स, ह
There are 33 consonants and 14 vowels.

All of the letters have a bar at the top of them, and when the letters make up a word the lines at the top connect for that word, like the word namaste: नमस्ते

Hindi - Six, seven, eight, nine, ten

We learned in Hindi that 1-5 is एक (ek), दो (do), तीन (teen), चार (chaar), पांच (paanch).

Now let's count up to ten!

6 छह (chhah) - sounds like ch-ay - 文A

7 सात (saat) - sounds sah-t - 文A

8 आठ (aath) - sounds like ah-t - 文A

9 नौ (nau) - sounds like no-ah - 文A

10 दस (das) - sounds like dah-s - 文A

Hindi - Dog, Cat


We just learned that to ask if someone speaks Hindi you say क्या आप हिंदी बोलते हैं? (kya aap hindee bolate hain?)?.

To say dog in Hindi, you say कुत्ता (kutta) and it sounds like kuh-tah 文A


To say cat in Hindi, you say बिल्ली (billee) and it sounds like bill-ee 文A


Also in Hindi, cats say myaau myaaoo and dogs say bho bho

Hindi - Do you speak Hindi?


Remember that to say please, you're welcome in Hindi, you say कृपया (krpaya), आपका स्वागत है (aapaka svaagat hai).

To ask if someone speaks Hindi, you say:

क्या आप हिंदी बोलते हैं? (kya aap hindee bolate hain?) which sounds like kee-yah ah-p hin-dee boh-lah-tay hay-n 文A


To say yes you would say हां (haan) which sounds like hah 文A


or to say no you would say नहीं (nahin) which sounds like neh-hee 文A

Remember that to say thank you in Hindi, you say Asante.

To say please in Hindi is कृपया (krpaya) - Sounds like k-ree-pee-ah. 文A

To say you're welcome, you say आपका स्वागत है (aapaka svaagat hai) - Sounds like ah-p-kah s-wah-gah-t hay. 文A

Hindi - Very good thanks, and you?

We just learned to say How are you? in Hindi, आप कैसे हैं (aap kaise hain?)

and Very good thanks is बहुत अच्छा धन्यवाद। (bahut achchha dhanyavaad)

To be polite you should also ask how the other person is doing.

And you? - और आप? (aur aap) - sounds like or ah-p 文A

Hindi - Good Morning


We just learned a few ways to say hello and goodbye in Hind, like नमस्ते (namaste) and अलविदा (alavida).

Sometimes you might want to say good morning, good afternoon, or good night.

Habari is a way to say hello that means "How is the news", Za means "for", and Asubuhi means "morning".
So sometimes to say good morning people will say Habari za asubuhi, which really means "How is the news for morning".

Good Day - नमस्कार (namaskaar) - sounds like nah-m-skah-r 文A

Good Evening - सुसंध्या (susandhya) - sounds like soo-sen-d-yah 文A

Good Night - शुभ रात्रि (shubh raatri) - sounds like shoo-b-rah-t-ree 文A

Hindi - Hello and Goodbye


We've now learned a whole year of Swahili!
Wow!

Let's try another language now, how about Hindi?

This is the language spoken by hundreds of millions of people acros the world, mostly in the country of India.

Hindi uses a different alphabet than English, called Devanagari.
It has 14 vowels and 33 consonants, and doesn't look at all like the English alphabet.

Let's learn how to say hello and goodbye in Hindi!

To say hello in Hindi you would say Namaste 文A

In the Devanagari letters it looks like this: नमस्ते
It's made up of letters like न na म ma स् sa ते ta, and when they are all together it sounds like nuh-mah-stay.

To say goodbye you can also say namaste, or you can say Alavida 文A

It's made up of letters like अ a ल la वि vi दा da, and when they are all together it sounds like ah-l-vee-dah.
