Italian - Dog, Cat


We just learned that to ask if someone speaks Italian you say Parli italiano?.

To say dog in Italian, you say cane and it sounds like kah-nay  /?/

To say cat in Italian, you say gatto and it sounds like gah-toh  /?/

Remember that to say thank you in Italian, you say grazie.

Italian - Please, You're Welcome


Remember that to say thank you in Italian, you say grazie.

To say please in Italian is per favore.
It sounds like pay-er fah-voh-ray /?/.

And to say you're welcome, you say prego and it sounds like pray-goh /?/.

Italian - Very good thanks, and you?


We just learned to say How are you? in Italian, Come va?

and Very good thanks is Molto bene, grazie.

To be polite you should also ask how the other person is doing.

And you? - E tu? - sounds like Ay too /?/

So with all that we've learned so far, we could understand a meeting between two people like this:

Mario: Ciao!
Luigi: Buongiorno! Come va?
Mario: Molto bene, grazie. E tu?
Luigi: Molto bene, grazie. Arrivederci!
Mario: Ciao!

In Spanish:

Italian - How are you?


We just learned some greetings in Italian, like ciao, arrivederci and Boungiorno.

If you want to say How are you? in Italian, you would say:

Come va? - sounds like coh-may-vah /?/

To respond and say Very good thanks, you would say

Molto bene, grazie. - sounds like moh-l-toh bay-nay /?/

We just learned a few ways to say hello and goodbye in Italian, like ciao and arrivederci.

Many times in Italian instead of hello people say good morning, good day, good evening or good night.

Italian - Hello and Goodbye


We've now learned a whole year of German words.
Sehr gut!

Let's try another language now, how about Italian?

First let's learn how to say hello and goodbye.
There are actually a bunch of ways to say Hello.

Hello - Ciao - sounds like chow /?/
This is like saying Hi to your friends.

- Salve - sounds like sah-l-vay /?/
This is like saying a polite hello, maybe to someone you don't really know very well.

- Pronto - sounds like proh-n-toh /?/
This is what you say when you answer the phone.

- Piacere - sounds like pee-ah-chay-day /?/
This really means more like nice to meet you, so it is something you would say maybe when you meet someone for the first time.

There are a few ways to say good bye also. Most of the ways to say hello can also be used to say goodbye.
Goodbye - Ciao - sounds chow /?/
This is for your good friends or people you know well.

- Salve - sounds like sah-l-vay /?/
This is like saying a polite goodbye, maybe to someone you don't really know very well.

- arrivederci - sounds like ah-dee-vay-day-er-chee /?/
This is a little more formal goodbye.
