Proximal Tubule

We just learned about the Bowman's Capsule.

Another part of the nephron of the kidney is the Proximal Tubule.

When the blood is all collected in the Bowman's Capsule, it slowly filters out some of the bad things in the blood which turn into urea to be pushed out of the body later.

Bowman's Capsule

We just learned about the Glomerulus.

Another part of the kidney is Bowman's Capsule.

This is also part of the nephron, just like the renal corpuscle and the glomerulus.
Remember that the glomerulus is the bunch of blood vessels that brings blood to the kidneys to be cleaned.
Bowman's Capsule wraps around the glomerulus, and collects the blood in one spot to be cleaned up.

Glomerulus

We just learned about the Renal Corpuscle.

Another part of the Kidnys is the Glomerulus.

This is a small bunch of blood vessel capillaries called a tuft that helps push the blood and water through the kidneys to be cleaned up.

Renal Corpuscle

We just learned about the Nephron.

Another part of the kidneys is the Renal Corpuscle.

The word renal has something to do with the kidneys, and the word corpuscle means something to do with cells.
The renal corpuscle works to help clean up the blood by filtering out bad stuff.

The kidneys take in blood from the body, clean it up and send it back around the body, and then any waste gets sent out of the body when you go to the bathroom.

Nephron

We just learned about the Interlobular Arteries and Veins.

Another part of the kidney is the Nephron.

In the renal column that we learned about, the nephron is a very tiny microscopic part of the renal column that helps do the work of filtering and cleaning the blood.

Interlobular Arteries and Veins

We just learned about the Renal Cortex.

Another part of the kidneys is the Interlobular Arteries and Veins.

These are the arteries that bring fresh oxygenated blood to the kidneys and the veins that take the used up deoxygenated blood away from the kidneys.

They are inside the Renal Capsule, and go around the kidneys to make sure there is a fresh supply of clean blood for the kidneys being pumped in every heartbeat.

Renal Cortex

We just learned about the Renal Capsule.

Another part of the kidneys is the Renal Cortex.

This is just inside of the renal capsule, and is where the kidneys start working on filtering out bad things from the blood.

Renal Capsule

We just started to learn about the Kidneys.

One part of the kidneys is the Renal Capsule.

This is the tough outside of the kidneys that keeps the inside safe.

Kidneys

We just learned about the Primary Olfactory Cortex and a lot of things about how the human nose works.

Another part of the human body are the two Kidneys.

The kidneys are an important part of the body that helps keep the blood clean with the right amount of liquids.
When the heart is pumping blood through the body, it gets sent through the kidneys where it gets cleaned up.

Primary Olfactory Cortex

We just learned about the Olfactory Bulb.

Another part of the way humans smell is the Primary Olfactory Cortex.

This is the last part of the brain that takes the messges from the Olfactory Bulb, figures out what the smell is that you are smelling, and tells the rest of your brain whether it is a good smell or a bad smell!

Olfactory Bulb

We just learned about the Olfactory Receptor Neuron.

Another part of how noses work is the Olfactory Bulb.

This is a part of the brain right in the front that takes the messages from the Olfactory Receptor Neuron.
The neuron sends messages to the bulb, and the bulb figures out what the smells mean and sends those messages to the rest of the brain so you know what you are smelling.

Olfactory Receptor Neuron

We just learned about the Olfactory Receptor.

Another part of the nose is the Olfactory Receptor Neuron.

The word "olfactory" means something to do with the sense of smell.
In Latin the word olere later turned into the English word odor, so olfactory means something like the smells factory.

The Olfactory Receptor we already learned about is where smells come in and get turned into messages for the brain.
The Olfactory Receptor Neurons are what take those messages from the Receptors and pass them on to the brain to understand what smells you are smelling.

Olfactory Receptor

We just learned about the Olfactory Mucosa.

Another part of the nose is the Olfactory Receptor, also called odorant receptors or just OR.

These are tiny little parts of cells in the nose that sit and wait for smells to come in.
There are tiny little hairs called cilia that these cells are in, just waiting for something to smell.

If a smell comes in, it will be made up of some chemicals.
Each olfactory receptor is built to handle a different type of smell.

When a smell like a flower comes in, that will bring flower smelling chemicals into the nose, and the receptors that are waiting for flower smells will get excited and let out other chemicals that tell the brain which kind of smell just came in.

Olfactory Mucosa

We just learned about the Vomeronasal Organ.

Another part of the nose is the Olfactory Mucosa.

This is the wet skin on the inside of the nose that helps collect the things in the air that make smells.
The mucosa is like the inside of your mouth, and is wet and slimy.
Those smells stick to the wet slimy skin, and then some other sensors in the nose work to figure out what the smell is.

Vomeronasal Organ

We just learned about the .

Another part of the nose is the Vomeronasal Organ.

This is back behind the nose and above the mouth, and is where all of the smells end up for your nose to smell.
The vomeronasal organ has some things called "receptors" that can tell when there are different types of chemicals in the air.
When those receptors sense the chemicals, they tell your brain that they are smelling something.

Sphenoethmoidal Recess

We just learned about the Nasal Meatus.

Another part of the nose is the Sphenoethmoidal Recess.

This is a place in the back of the inside of the nose that connects to the sinus.
The sinus is where the mucus comes from, which is sometimes called things like snot or boogers.

Nasal Meatus

We just learned about the Nasal Concha.

Another part of the nose is the Nasal Meatus.

Remember that the concha are like shelves inside the nose that help split up the air to go into different paths.
The meatus is the paths that the concha sends the air into.

Nasal Concha

We just learned about the Choana.

Another part of the nose is the Concha.

Inside the nose, the concha are long bony shelves that help split up the air coming in so the air comes in nice and steady.

Part of this nose has some nerves and blood vessels coming in that some people think are the cause of brain freeze.

Choana

We just learned about the Vomeronasal Cartilage.

Another part of the nose is the Choana, also called the posterior nasal apertures or internal nostrils.

This is the part of the nose that is behind the nostrils, where the nose meets the throat.
You can breath through either your nose or your mouth, meaning that your throat or trachea is connected to both your nose and mouth.

The spot where the throat meets the nose area is the choana.

Vomeronasal Cartilage

We've now learned about 4 different types of cartilage in the nose: Septal Nasal Cartilage in the middle, Lateral Nasal Cartilage on the outside upper part, Major Alar Cartilage the big flare out of the nostril, and the Minor Alar Cartilage the bottom of the nostril by the face.

The fifth and last of the nasal cartilages is the Vomeronasal Cartilage.

We leaned a while back that the vomer a bone that is part of your skull, behind your nose and above the roof of your mouth.

The vomeronasal cartilage is between the nose and the vomer, and helps support other parts of the nose that help you smell things.
