Jesus Crucifixion - It is finished

When Jesus was being crucified on the cross, he said "I am thirsty" to get a last drink, then said "It is finished" and "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit".

After he said that, he died on the cross.

When he died, the curtain in the temple was torn from top to bottom, and the earth shook.

Jesus Crucificion - Why have you forsaken me?

We just learned about Jesus telling Mary and John to take care of each other.

When Jesus had been on the cross a long time, he was almost ready to die.

He cried out My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Jesus was going to die while carrying the sin of the whole world with him.

In the book of Psalms, King David had written a song that began like that, and then goes on to talk about being in pain and suffering, but then being delivered by God and praising God as he rules over all the nations.

Jesus talked a lot about things that prophets said were going to happen, and many times told people that he was proof that some of the prophecies were coming true.

Psalms were poetry and songs that were written mostly by King David about 1,000 years before Jesus came along.

Psalm #22 in the book of Psalms starts off with: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
which is exactly what Jesus said. He knew every word of every Psalm.

The Psalm goes on to say: "a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet. They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment."

Jesus was on the cross with his hands and feet pierced, and the solders had divided up his clothes and cast lots for them.

It goes on at the end to tell how the Lord will rule over the nations, and ends with: "They will proclaim his righteousness, declaring to a people yet unborn: He has done it!"

Jesus talked in parables a lot, and did things that were part of fulfilling the prophecies of the prophets from long ago.
King David's Psalm was written over 1,000 years before Jesus came along, but on the cross he was still fulfilling the prophecy, and even said the first line of the Psalm that talked about what was happening.

Jesus Crucifixion - Here is your son

We just learned about Jesus saying to forgive people at his crucifixion.

When Jesus was on the cross, he looked down and saw his mother Mary, and also his disciple John.

He said to them Woman, here is your son and Here is your mother.

Even though Jesus was dying on the cross, he was thinking about who would take care of his mother when he was gone, so he told his disciple to take care of his mother when he was gone.

Jesus Crucifixion - Father forgive them

We just learned about Jesus being crucified next to criminals.

When Jesus was being put up on the cross, he said Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.

God sent Jesus into the world to die on the cross for everyone's sins.
It was all part of God's plan, and the people who were crucifying Jesus were just soldiers and workers and didn't know he was the son of God.

With all of the power that Jesus had he could have walked down off the cross but didn't, instead he asked God the Father to not destroy the world for what they were doing because it was all part of his plan.

In that way it showed us how much he loved the world because he went through the suffering to save us.

Jesus Crucifixion - With criminals

When Jesus was nailed to the cross he was put between two criminals.

Crucifixion was one of the worst punishments for anyone, so even though Jesus was a good person he was punished with bad people.

One of the criminals was not nice to him, said nasty things to him and said that if Jesus was really the Messiah he should save himself.
The other criminal told the nasty one that he was wrong, and that while both the criminals were being punished for things they did wrong, Jesus hadn't done anything wrong.
He asked Jesus to remember him in his kingdom.

Because this man had faith in Jesus, even though he was a criminal Jesus said that the nice criminal would be with him in paradise that day.

Jesus Trial - Crown of Thorns

After Pontius Pilate sent Jesus to be crucified,
the crowd of people made fun of him, put a robe on him and gave him a crown made of sharp thorns to wear to pretend like he was a king since he said he was the king of the Jews.

Even though Jesus was very powerful, he did not fight back because he knew it was all part of God's plan for him to die on the cross.

Jesus Trial - Pontius Pilate

After Jesus was put on trial by the group called the sanhedrin, he was taken to the people in charge of the city he lived in to be put on trial.

The person's name was Pontius Pilate, and he was the ruler in the area of Judea that was part of the country called Rome.

The people who did not like Jesus brought him to Pontius Pilate and said that Jesus was telling everyone that he was the King of the Jews.
They said that it was against the law for him to say he was king, because the Roman Emperor was in charge of all the people and that would mean Jesus was better than him.

Pontius Pilate talked to Jesus but didn't think that he did anything wrong, so he wanted to have him set free.

The angry crowd said that they wanted Jesus to be guilty, so Pilate agreed to have Jesus crucified on a cross.

Jesus Trial - Sanhedrin

We just learned about when Jesus was arrested, and he told his apostles not to fight after they got out their swords.

After Jesus was arrested by the people who didn't like him, they took him to the leaders of the Hebrews at that time, a group of people called the Sanhedrin that were in charge of making sure people were following God's laws.

Most of them did not like Jesus and thought he was causing problems with the people, and they did not believe he was the son of God.

They made fun of him, beat him, and asked him many questions.
When they asked him if he was Christ the son of God, he said that he was.

For the Hebrews, it was against the law for a person to say that, and they did not believe that Jesus really was the son of God.
So they said that he was guilty of blasphemy, which means saying things against God.

Arrest of Jesus - Sword

We just learned that Jesus had gone off to a place called Gethsemene and prayed to God about the job he knew he had to do,
and that Judas gave Jesus a kiss to betray him to the guards.

When the guards arrested Jesus, some of his apostles tried to fight them, and one of them cut off the ear of one of the people arresting Jesus.

Jesus told his followers not to fight, because he knew that he had to go and die on the cross, so he had to go with the guards.

He told them "Put your sword back in its place, .. for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.
He said that if he wanted to he could call down angels to protect him if he wanted, but he knew that he had to die on the cross.

Arrest of Jesus - Judas' Kiss

We just learned that Jesus had gone off to a place called Gethsemene and prayed to God about the job he knew he had to do.

When he was there with his apostles, Judas came up to Jesus and gave him a kiss.

There were guards with Judas, hired by people that did not like Jesus.
When Judas gave Jesus a kiss, that was to tell the guards who Jesus was, and they came and arrested him.

Jesus knew that Judas would betray him, as he had told him at the Last Supper.

Arrest of Jesus - Jesus' Prayer

After Jesus had eaten the Last Supper with his disciples, they went out to a place called Gethsemene.

There Jesus went for a walk by himself to pray.
He prayed to God the Father and said "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."

He wasn't talking about an actual cup, but the job that he had to do that was very difficult.
Jesus knew that very soon he was going to die on the cross for the sins of the whole world, and this was a very hard thing to do.
He asked God for help, and said that he would do whatever God commanded.
When he got done praying he want back to his disciples who had all fallen asleep!
He told them to wake up and pray so that they would be strong.

Last Supper - Communion

We've learned that Jesus was having his Last Supper with his apostles, he said that Judas would betray him.

While Jesus was at the dinner, he took some bread and gave it to his disciples, told them to eat it, and that it was his body.
Then he poured some wine in a cup and gave it to his disciples, told them to drink it, and that it was his blood.

He told them to eat and drink the bread and wine like that to remember him because he was going to die on the cross for them.

This is sometimes called Holy Communion, or the Eucharist, or the Lord's Supper.
The word Eucharist means thanksgiving.

Last Supper - Judas' Betrayal

When Jesus was having his Last Supper with his apostles, he said that one of them would betray him.

There were a lot of people that did not like Jesus, and some of them wanted to have him killed, but they wanted someone like one of his apostles to tell them where he was.

Jesus knew that Judas would be the one who would do it, so at the last supper he told his apostles that Judas was the one who would betray him.

Judas left the supper and went to tell the people who wanted to kill Jesus where he was.

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King

We just learned about the Plans to kill Jesus

After Jesus told his apostles that he was the Messiah,
that he would be killed and then raised back to life three days later
and was transfigured on the mountaintop he went to Jerusalem.

Jesus told his apostles to go to the nearby village and they would find a donkey.
He told them to take the donkey and bring it back to Jesus.

The apostles went to the village and just like Jesus said they found a donkey tied up there waiting,
so they untied it and brought it to Jesus.

Jesus rode the donkey into Jerusalem, and when he got there a big crowd of people was cheering in the streets for him.
They took their coats off and put them on the ground for Jesus to sit on or walk on.
They cut branches down from the palm trees and placed them on the road for him.
They shouted out loud to him:
Hosanna!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!

The people of Jerusalem saw Jesus as their king coming to save them.

Plans to kill Jesus

We just learned about Jesus' Transfiguration.

After Jesus had done many miracles and taught people using parables, some of the people in those days didn't like what Jesus was doing.

Some of the leaders were upset because people were following Jesus instead of them.

So they started making plans to have Jesus killed, because they could not stop him from doing miracles and teaching people.

Jesus Transfiguration

We learned that Jesus told his apostles that he was the Messiah, and that he would be killed and then raised back to life three days later.

After that he went up on to a high mountain with Peter, James and John.
When they were up there, Jesus' face shined bright like the sun and his clothes became white as light.
Jesus' went through a big change to look beautiful and holy, and we call that transfiguration.

When Jesus was up on the mountain, he talked to Moses and Elijah, who were in heaven.

A bright cloud came over them and God's voice from the cloud said This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!

Jesus told them not to tell anyone else about what had happened until after he was raised from the dead.
