Virgin of the Rocks - Leonardo da Vinci

We just learned about Leonardo da Vinci's painting Annunciation.

Another of da Vinci's paintings was Virgin of the Rocks.

da Vinci moved to Milan Italy in 1482, and worked there until 1499 AD.
Some people call this da Vinci's "First Milanese Period".
While he was there, he made one of his most famous, The Last Supper, and a few others like his painting of the Virgin Mary.

This painting is about 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide, and shows Mary with Jesus and John the Baptist as babies, and the angel Uriel.

An interesting thing about this painting is that there are two copies of it.
One copy is in the Louvre museum in Paris France, and the other is in the National Gallery in London England.
Most people think they were both made by da Vinci, or at least that he helped work on them and maybe had some painting assistants help as well.

Brake Caliper

We just learned about the Rotor.

Another part of a car is the Brake Caliper.

We know the rotor is a disc shaped part inside the wheel that is spinning around.
The caliper goes on the outside of the rotor, and when you hit the brakes it pushes onto the rotor to stop it from spinning around.

Emperor Tamarin

We just learned about the Cotton Top Tamarin.

Another type of new world monkey is the Emperor Tamarin.

This is a very small monkey, only growing to about 1 pound and less than 1 foot long.

They get their name because they have a big white moustache, and someone thought their moustache looked like a German emperor at the time named Wilhelm II who had the same kind of big moustache.

Most of the time these monkeys live in the trees in the Amazon rainforest, and they eat small things like fruits, nuts, sap from trees, and sometimes small bugs.

Concha

We just learned about the Intertragic Notch.

On the outer ear we know about:
- The auricle or pinna, which is the main outside part of the ear
- The helix, which is the folded over part around the outside
- The antihelix, which is the Y shaped bump that sticks out
- The antitragus, which is the bump pointing up that is connected to the earlobe
- The tragus, which is the part closest to the cheek that sticks out
- The earlobe, which is the part that hangs down at the bottom
- The intertragic notch, which is the open space between the tragus and antitragus

Another part of the ear is the Concha.

This is the part of the ear that is shaped like a bowl, and leads right into the deeper inside part of the ear.

Oman

We just learned about the country of Mongolia.
Let's learn a little about the country of Oman! (sounds like oh-mah-n)

This is a country in the middle east, bordering United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean.
It is about 120,000 square miles, and 4.8 million people live there.
People in Oman speak the Arabic language.

The flag of Oman has a red left side, and then sideways stripes of white, red green, and a white picture on the left.
Red is for the Persian Gulf, white is for the leader of the country, green is for the mountains, and the picture is swords and a dagger.

To eat in Oman you might have harees, which is wheet that is ground up, mixed with meat and water and then cooked.

Crown Him with Many Crowns

We just learned about the Come Thou Font of Every Blessing.

Another famous hymn is Crown Him with Many Crowns written in 1851 in England.

The first 6 verses of the song were first written by Matthew Bridges who was a priest from Essex England.
Later on a different priest named Godfrey Thring added 6 more verses for a total of 12.

The music for the tune came from a song called Diademata by Sir George Job Elvey, a musician from England.
Diademata comes from the latin word for crowned or haloed.
