We just learned about the Christian song This Little Light of Mine.
Another famous Christian song is Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.
This is a song called an African-American spirtual song, and it was sung by black people when they were slaves.
The song talks about a chariot coming down from the sky to carry the singer off to heaven.
In the book of 2 Kings in the Bible, the prophet Elijah is carried up to heaven on a chariot:
"As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind."
No one really knows who wrote the song the first time, but in 1909 the Fisk Jubilee Singers made a recording of the song.
Refrain:
Swing low, sweet chariot, Coming for to carry me home.
Swing low, sweet chariot, Coming for to carry me home.
I looked over Jordan, and what did I see, Coming for to carry me home.
A band of angels coming after me, Coming for to carry me home.
[Refrain]
If you get there before I do, Coming for to carry me home.
Tell all my friends I'm coming too, Coming for to carry me home.
[Refrain]
The brightest day that ever I saw Coming for to carry me home.
When Jesus washed my sins away, Coming for to carry me home.
[Refrain]
I'm sometimes up and sometimes down, Coming for to carry me home.
But still my soul feels heavenly bound, Coming for to carry me home.
[Refrain]
