Snow Roller

We just learned about what a blizzard is.

Another type of weather is called a snow roller.

When there is a strong enough wind and the right kinds of snow are piled on top of each other, the wind can blow some small chunks of snow around and it can collect into larger and larger snow balls. This is the same kind of snow rolling used in making snowmen, but this is just done with no one else around.

Sometimes it makes a ball just like making a snowman, and sometimes it makes a long roll like a carpet being rolled up.

Iliac Veins

We've now learned about all of the veins that come up from the foot and up the leg.

The Plantar and Dorsal digital veins in the toes go up to the Metatarsal Veins and Dorsal venous arch in the foot.
The Great Saphenous Vein goes all the way from the ankle up to the pelvis.
The Small Saphenous Vein goes from the ankle up to the Tibial and Fibular veins in the lower leg, to the Popliteal Vein in the knee, and then the Femoral Vein in the thigh.

All of those veins bring deoxygenated blood from the toes up and out of the legs.

After the legs, the blood goes to the iliac veins in the pelvis area right above the legs.

We just learned about the famous work of art Houses at L'Estaque by French painter Georges Braque.

Another famous work of art is the painting Houses at Fruit Dish on a Checkered Tablecloth by Spanish painter Juan Gris in 1917.

Juan Gris's painting is a part of the Cubism style of Abstract Art, where the painter liked to use lines and triangles to try to show a different side of a picture, making it look very strange, but still very interesting.

Paul's Letter to the Ephesians

We just learned about Paul's letter to the church in Galatia.

Another letter Paul wrote was to a church in a town called Ephesus which is now part of the country of Turkey.

He wrote to tell the church that all Christians need to work together, and stand strong with their faith in God.

One of the most famous parts of Ephesians is where Paul talks about the Armor of God.
He's not talking about armor that you put on like your clothes, but armor that you wear to protect yourself when people try to say things against God.

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Houses at L'Estaque - Braque

We just learned about the famous work of art Farewell by August Macke.

Another famous work of art is the painting Houses at l'Estaque by French painter Georges Braque.

This was a painting of some houses in the French town of L'Estaque.
Looking at the painting, it may be hard to tell what the shapes are, because it looks like cubes, triangles and lines.
When one of the art critics saw Braque's painting, he said it looked like little cubes, and because of that this type of art was nicknamed Cubism.

Braque was very famous for helping start the Cubism movement, along with Pablo Picasso.

Dust Storm

We just learned about what a sand storm is.

Another type of weather is a dust storm.

It is a lot like a sand storm, but instead of a big rolling cloud of heavy sand, it is more like a fog of dust all around everything, sometimes as high as one mile off the ground.

It is dangerous to be outside breathing the air in a dust storm, and the dust can ruin crops and machines, and even spread diseases all over the world.

Another letter Paul wrote was to a church in a town called Galatia which is now part of the country of Turkey.

The church there was following some people who were telling them the wrong things, so Paul sent them the letter to try and straighten things out.

Galatia also had a lot of people that were Gentiles, meaning they were not the Hebrews that were God's chosen people from a long time ago.
Some people argued that they couldn't be Christians, but Paul helped them understand that everyone is equal in the eyes of God.

One of the most well known parts of Galatians is Paul telling people that they are all one in Christ.

We just learned about the famous work of art The Tower of Blue Horses by German artist Franz Marc.

Another famous work of art is Farewell by German artist August Macke in 1914.

Macke was part of a group of artists called Der Blaue Reiter who worked together to make art that used strong colors and shapes, was exciting and had meaning behind it but didn't look like a picture of real people.

His painting Farewell was made when World War I started, and it shows the sadness of people because of the war.

Sand Storm

We just learned about Freezing Rain.

Another type of weather is called a sand storm.

When strong winds come along over desert areas with lots of sand, the wind keeps blowing on them until they are shaking.
The wind keeps blowing and eventually the sand is blown up just a little off the ground and is bouncing along the ground.
As the wind keeps up for a long time, more and more sand is blown up into the air higher and higher until it becomes a giant sand storm.

Sand storms can be 50 feet high, as tall as a five story building, and it is very dangerous to get caught in one.
It is not good for you to breathe in sand, so you have to cover your whole face up and get inside quick!

We just learned about Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians.

Paul wrote two letters to the church in Corinth, so there is a Second Letter to the Corinthians.

This second letter mostly gives instructions to the church about how to collect money for the poor.
There is a common saying of: You reap what you sow.
That is a farming saying that means if you plant a lot of seeds then you will get a lot of crops, but if you don't plant many seeds you won't get many crops.

It's a way to tell people that if they helped poor people by giving to them, then they would be rewarded with many gifts by God.

We just learned about the famous work of art When Will You Marry? by French artist Paul Gauguin in 1892.

Another famous work of art is the The Tower of Blue Horses by German artist Franz Marc in 1913.
This picture is very large, over 6 feet tall and over 4 feet wide.

It is painted with very bright bold colors, and not the real colors of horses, but it is supposed to show how strong and beautiful they are.

The different lines and circles and other shapes are used to make it look like parts of the picture are in motion, and the colors of the picture go from darker at the bottom to lighter at the top to show how light shines down on the horses and their strong colors.

Freezing Rain

We just learned about heat lightning.

Another type of weather is called freezing rain.

We know that snow is when ice crystals form in clouds, hail is when drops of water freeze in clouds, sleet is when snow falls down and melts and re-freezes.

Freezing rain is when water droplets fall down from the cloud when it is really cold out, but the water doesn't freeze until right when it hits the ground.

This can be really dangerous because unlike snow you can't really see it, but the ground can be totally covered in a sheet of thin slippery ice.
It can coat trees and plants in ice too which can cause them to fall over or lose branches.
The ice made by freezing rain is called glaze.

We just learned about the type of dog the Rough Collie.

Another type of dog is the dalmatian.

Dalmatians are white dogs with black spots. Puppy dalmatians are born all white, and the spots show up a few weeks after they are born.
Some dalmatians have brown or grey-blue spots.

They have a long history of being dogs for fire stations, because in the old days fire engines were pulled by horses.
Dalmatians get along very well with horses, so they could run in front of the engine barking for everyone to clear the way without being scared.
Also they are very good guard dogs, so they helped keep the fire station safe.

There are two types of tibial veins, anterior and posterior.
The word anterior means in the front, and posterior means in the back.
So the anterior tibial veins are in the front part of your leg by your tibia bone, and the posterior tibial veins are in the back part of your leg by your tibia bone.
