Black Bearded Saki


We just learned about the White-Faced Saki.

Another type of new world monkey is the Black Bearded Saki, also called chiropotes satanas.

This type of monkey lives only in some parts of Brazil by the Amazon river.
They have black fur, and a big bushy beard and a long black fluffy tail.

Their science name chiropotes means "hand drinker" because these monkeys have been seen using their hands to scoop water into their mouths.
This helps these monkeys keep their beards clean.

White-Faced Saki


We just learned about the Bald Uakari.

Another kind of new world monkey is the White-Faced Saki, also called the Guinan Saki, Golden-Faced Saki or Pithecia Pithecia.

This kind of monkey lives in South America, spending most of its life in the trees eating fruits, nuts and bugs.
Just like you might have guessed from their name, these monkeys a very white face that is different than the rest of their black body.
Female monkeys aren't as brightly colored as the males and will usually just have grey fur.

Bald Uakari


We just learned about the Azara's Night Monkey.

Another type of new world monkey is the Bald Uakari.

This type of monkey has a bright red face and a bald head.
It lives in South America, spending most of its life in the trees.

Bald Uakari monkeys grow to be about 7 pounds and 18 inches long, and eat mostly fruits, nuts and bugs.
Even though their red face and bald head look weird, a healthy red face means that this type of monkey is healthy!

Azara's Night Monkey


We just learned about the Grey Bellied Night Monkey.

Another type of new world monkey is the Azara's Night Monkey also calledthe southern night monkey or aotus azarae.

This type of monkey lives in South America, and mostly lives in the trees.
They grow to be about 13 inches long and weigh a little over 2 pounds.

Just like their name says, these monkeys like to stay up at all night long, and they mostly eat things like leaves, flowers and bugs.

Grey-Bellied Night Monkey


We just learned about the Black Capped Squirrel Monkey.

Another type of new world monkey is the Grey-Bellied Night Monkey.

Just like you would guess from their name, these monkeys stay up at night like an owl.
And just like an owl, they have really big eyes so they can try to see as much as they can in the dark.

These monkeys live only in some small parts of South America.
They only grow to be about 3 pounds, and they live in the trees eating fruit, vegetables, and small bugs.

Black-Capped Squirrel Monkey


We just learned about the Tufted Capuchin.

Another type of new world monkey is the Black-Capped Squirrel Monkey.

They can grow to be about 2 pounds, and about one foot long.
Their fur is mostly grey on the outside, their bellies are white, and their head is black with white around their eyes.

For food these monkeys eat mostly fruit, nuts and some bugs.
They live up in the trees, and can leap from one tree to another tree over 6 feet away.

Tufted Capuchin


We just learned about the Wedge Capped Capuchin.

Another kind of New World Monkey is the Tufted Capuchin also called the brown capuchin, black-capped capuchin, pin monkey, or sapajus apella.

This monkey lisves in South America and the Caribbean islands.
They mostly live in the trees and eat fruits and bugs.
Most of these monkeys will grow to be about 10 pounds and 2 feet long.

Tufted Capuchins are very smart, and have learned how to use tools for food and water.
They know how to take a rock and bang it against a nut to open it, or how to find something like a cup they can use to drink water.
Not many animals know how to do anything like this, so these monkeys are really smart!

Wedge-Capped Capuchin


We just learned about the Golden Lion Tamarin.

Another type of New World Monkey is the Wedge-Capped Capuchin, also called weeper capuchin or Cebus olivaceus.

These small monkeys grow to be about 6 pounds, and can grow to be over 30 years old.
They live in the forests of South America, jumping through the trees to get around.
Wedge-Capped Capuchins get their name from the dark fur on their head that makes it look like they are wearing a little hat or a cap.
For food these monkeys eat small animals like bugs or snails, and fruits or nuts.

One funny thing scientists saw is that sometimes these monkeys will rub themselves with millipedes on their fur, and people think the millipedes let out a chemical that works like bug spray for the monkeys.

Golden Lion Tamarin


We just learned about the Brown Mantled Tamarin.

Another type of New World Monkey is the Golden Lion Tamarin, also called the golden marmoset or leontoithecus rosalia.

This is a small monkey that lives in Brazil, with only about 3,000 of them left in the wild.
These monkeys only grow to about 10 inches long and weigh about 1 pound.

They have bright orange fur with a big furry mane around their face like a lion.
Mostly these monkeys live in trees, using their little claws to hang on to the bark.
Usually for food they will eat fruits, nuts or small bugs.

Brown-Mantled Tamarin


We just learned about the Emperor Tamarin.

Another type of new world monkey is the Brown-Mantled Tamarin, also called Spix's saddle-back tamarin or leontocebus fuscicollis.

This is a small monkey that lives in South America, and grows to be less than 2 pounds.
They mostly live in the trees, and they have a dark brown head and shoulders.

Emperor Tamarin


We just learned about the Cotton Top Tamarin.

Another type of new world monkey is the Emperor Tamarin.

This is a very small monkey, only growing to about 1 pound and less than 1 foot long.

They get their name because they have a big white moustache, and someone thought their moustache looked like a German emperor at the time named Wilhelm II who had the same kind of big moustache.

Most of the time these monkeys live in the trees in the Amazon rainforest, and they eat small things like fruits, nuts, sap from trees, and sometimes small bugs.

Cotton-Top Tamarin


We just learned about the Common Marmoset.

Another type of New World Monkey is the Cotton-Top Tamarin, also called the saguinus oedipus.

This is a very small monkey that lives in Columbia.
It grows to about 10 inches long, and weighs about 1 pound.

Just like you would think from the name, these monkeys have white fluffy hair on their head.
They mostly eat bugs, fruits, and the liquid that comes off of trees like sap.
These monkeys do a lot of talking, and can make over 30 different types of whistles and chirps to talk to other monkeys.
Sometimes they might be telling the other monkeys that they want some food, or other times they might be warning everyone of danger.

There are a lot of these monkeys being kept as pets, but there are only about 6,000 cotton top tamarins left in the wild.

Common Marmoset


We just learned about the Proboscis Monkey.

We've learned about 19 of the 138 types of Old World Monkeys.
Let's learn about some of the 154 types of New World Monkeys!

One type of New World Monkey is the Common Marmoset also called callithrix jacchus.

These monkeys are very small, only about 7 inches tall and weighing less than 1 pound.
Their fur can be lots of different colors, like brown, grey or yellow.
On their heads they have white ear tufts that stick out making them look like they have big white poofy ears.

Marmosets live in South America, and eat mostly just insects and the gooey things inside of trees like sap.
They have tiny claws and teeth, so they will dig on a tree to get the sap and then eat it up.

There are lots of different faces these monkeys make to talk to each other, like holding their mouth open, frowning, staring or flattening their ear tufts.
They make high or low chirping or whistle sounds to send different messages.

Proboscis Monkey


We just learned about the Golden Snub Nosed Monkey.

Another type of old world monkey is the Proboscis Monkey also called nasalis larvatus.

This type of monkey has a long nose, red brown skin and a long tail.

They live mostly in mangrove forests in the southeast part of the island of Borneo.
These monkeys are over 2 feet tall, and they weigh about 50 pounds.
Their nose can grow up to 4 inches long.

Proboscis monkeys make lots of sounds like honking at younger monkeys or when they are in danger.

Golden Snub Nosed Monkey


We just learned about the Red Shanked Douc.

Another type of old world monkey is the Golden Snub Nosed Monkey.

These monkeys live in the mountains of China, and can live in snowy colder places than most monkeys.

Golden snub nosed monkeys grow to about 2 feet long and weigh about 35 pounds.
They have long gold colored fur and white faces.

Red-Shanked Douc


We just learned about the Maroon Leaf Monkey.

Another type of Old World Monkey is the Red-Shanked Douc.

This monkey lives only in Vietnam, Laos or Cambodia.

They spend most of their lives in the trees, and only sometimes come down to the ground for water.
Since they live in the trees they are great jumpers, and can jump up to 20 feet!
Red-Shanked Doucs grow to about 2 feet long, with a tail about 2 and 1/2 feet long, and they can weigh up to 24 pounds.

These monkeys are one of the most colorful of all monkeys, and have been called the queen of primates because of their colors.
Their fur has many different colors, like red, orange, yellow, brown, black, and grey.
They have red legs, grey and white arms, black hands and feet, and a yellow face with blue eyelids and white whiskers.

For food these monkeys mostly only eat leaves, and when they digest those leaves in their stomachs it makes a lot of gas, so these monkeys are known to burp a lot!

Maroon Leaf Monkey


We just learned about the Dusky Leaf Monkey.

Another type of monkey is the Maroon Leaf Monkey also called the red leaf monkey.

This monkey lives on the island of Borneo, spending most of their time in the trees.
They get their name from the color of the fur on their body.

These monkeys mostly eat fruits, seeds and leaves, but they also sometimes eat dirt!
There are termites that make dirt mounds for homes, and because the termites are living there they leave a bunch of other minerals like calcium, magnesium or aluminum.
The monkeys need these minerals, so they will go down to the dirt and eat it, but not the termites just the dirt!

Dusky Leaf Monkey


We just learned about the Northern Plains Gray Langur.

Northern Plains Gray Langur


We just learned about the Zanzibar Red Colobus.

Another type of Old World Monkey is the Northern Plains Gray Langur, also called the sacred langur, or hanuman langur.

This monkey can grow to over 2 feet long, and weigh about 40 pounds.
They have mostly light colored fur on their body, but their back, arms, legs and face are all black.

People in some parts of the world worship these monkeys as they believe they were part of some magical battles long ago.

These monkeys mostly live in India, and can either live pretty much anywhere from forests to dry lands.
Groups of these monkeys live together, sometimes over 100 monkeys living together.
To eat these monkeys mostly have fruits and leaves, and sometimes bugs.

Some people keep these monkeys as pets like guard monkeys to scare away other types of monkeys they don't like.
They also are friendly with a type of deer called the chital deer, where they will work together to help warn each other of predators.

Zanzibar Red Colobus


We just learned about the Mantled Guereza.

Another type of Old World Monkey is the Zanzibar Red Colobus, also called Kirk's red colobus.

This is a type of monkey that lives only on the island of Zanzibar.
Their fur can be white, red and black.
Usually their back is red, and they have a black stripe on their sides and arms, their belly is white and their face is black.

They don't get very big, only about 25 pounds.
One funny thing is that these monkeys smell bad, and are called "kima punju" which means "poison monkey" and some people used to think that their bad smell was bad magic that killed the trees.

Most primates have a thumb that sticks out a little different, but these monkeys are part of the "colobus" family, which means "he cut short".
The name is because they only have a tiny little thumb, but they have longer fingers than most monkeys.
